Meta(facebook):

In Greek, the prefix meta-is generally less esoteric than in English; Greek meta-is original to the Latin words post-or announcement-. The use of the prefix in this sense occurs sometimes in scientific English terms deduced from Greek. For illustration, the term Metatheria (the name for the clade of marsupial mammals) uses the prefix meta-in the sense the Metatheria do on the tree of life conterminous to the Theria (the placental mammals).

Epistemology:

In epistemology, and frequently in common use, the prefix meta-is used to mean about (its order). For illustration, metadata is data about data (who has produced them, when what format the data are in, and so on). In a database, metadata are also data about data stored in a data workbook and describe information (data) about database tables similar to the table name, table proprietor, details about columns, – describing the table. Also, metamemory in psychology means an existent's knowledge about whether or not they would remember a commodity if they concentrated on recalling it. The ultramodern sense of"an X about X"has given rise to generalities like"meta-cognition" (cognition about cognition),"meta- emotion" ( emotion about emotion),"meta-discussion" ( discussion about discussion),"meta-joke" ( joke about jokes) and"metaprogramming" ( writing programs that write programs)."Metagaming'' consequently, means game about the game. Still, it has a different meaning depending on the type of game. In part- playing games, this means that someone with an advanced position of knowledge is playing, i.e. that the player incorporates factors that are outside the factual frame of the game. The player has knowledge that wasn't acquired through the play and experience in the game but was obtained from external sources. This type of metagaming is frequently lowered upon in numerous part-playing game communities because it impairs game balance and equivalency of occasion. (2) Metagaming can also relate to a game that's used to produce or change the rules while playing the game. You can play this kind of metagame and choose which rules apply during the game itself. So you have the possibility, among other effects, to acclimate or increase the position of difficulty. Similar metagame include etal. crusade part- playing games like Halo 3. (3) Complex card-or board games,e.g. poker or chess, are also called a metagame. According to Nigel Howard, this kind of metagame is defined as a decision-making process that's deduced from the analysis of possible issues about external variables that change a problem. (4)

Abstraction and self-reference:

Any subject can be said In a rule-grounded system, a metarule is a rule governing the operation of other rules. (5)to have a metatheory, a theoretical consideration of its parcels — similar to its foundations, styles, form, and mileage — in an advanced position of abstraction. In linguistics, an alphabet is considered as being expressed in a metalanguage, a language operating in an advanced position to describe parcels of the plain language (and not itself).

Etymology:
The prefix comes from the Greek preposition and prefix meta- (μετα-), from μετά, (6) which meant"after", "beside", "with", "among" (concerning the preposition, some of these meanings were distinguished by case marking). Other meanings include"beyond"," conterminous" and" tone", and it's also used in the forms μετ-before vowels and μεθ-"meth-"before aspirated vowels.

The foremost form of the word"meta" is the Mycenaean Greek me-ta, written in Linear B syllabic script. (7) The Greek preposition is cognate with the Old English preposition medial" with", still planted as a prefix in midwife. Its use in English is the result of back- confirmation from the word" theories". In origin Metaphysics was just the title of one of the top workshops of Aristotle; it was so named (by Andronicus of Rhodes) because in the customary ordering of the workshop of Aristotle it was the book following Drugs; it, therefore, meant nothing further than" (the book that comes) after (the book entitled) Drugs". Still, indeed Latin pens misinterpreted this as containing theories constituted"the wisdom of what's beyond the physical". (8) Nevertheless, Aristotle's Metaphysics enunciates considerations of nature above physical realities, which one can examine through this particular part of the gospel, for illustration, the actuality of God. The use of the prefix was later extended to other surroundings grounded on the understanding of theories to mean"the wisdom of what's beyond the physical".

Early use in English:

The Oxford English Dictionary cites uses of the meta-prefix as" further, about" ( similar as meta-economics and meta-gospel) going back to 1917. Still, these conformations are resemblant to the original" theories" and" metaphysical", that is, as a prefix to general nouns ( fields of study) or adjectives. Going by the OED citations, it began being used with specific nouns in connection with fine sense eventually before 1929. (In 1920 David Hilbert proposed an exploration design in what was called"metamathematics.")

A notable early citation isW.V.O. Quine's 1937 use of the word"meta theorem", (9) where meta-has the ultramodern meaning of"an X about X".
Douglas Hofstadter, in his 1979 book Gödel, Escher, Bach (and in the 1985 effect, Metamagical Themas), vulgarized this meaning of the term. The book, which deals with tone- reference and strange circles, and touches on Quine and his work, was influential in numerous computer-related mores and may be responsible for the fashionability of the prefix, for its use as a single term, and for the numerous recent contrivances which use it. (10) Hofstadter uses meta as a stage-alone word, as an adjective, and as a directional preposition (" going meta," a term he coins for the old rhetorical trick of taking a debate or analysis to another position of abstraction, as when notoriety says"This debate is not going anywhere"). This book may also be responsible for the association of"meta" with strange circles, as opposed to just abstraction. According to Hofstadter, it's about tone- reference, which means a judgment, idea, or formula refers to itself. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes it as" showing or suggesting unequivocal mindfulness of itself or oneself as a member of its order, cleverly tone-referential". (11) The judgment"This judgment contains thirty-six letters," and the judgment which embeds it, are exemplifications of"met sentences" representing themselves in this way. As maintained in the book, Gödel, Escher, Bacha's strange circle is given if different logical statements or propositions are put together in contradiction and therefore distorted in meaning and induce logical dichotomies. One illustration is the fabricator incongruity. A fabricator's incongruity is an incongruity in gospel or sense that arises when a judgment claims its falsehood (or untruth), for case"This judgment isn't true." Until the morning of the 20th century, this kind of dichotomies was a considerable problem for a philosophical proposition of verity. Alfred Tarski answered this difficulty by proving that similar dichotomies don't live with a harmonious separation of object language and metalanguage. (12)"For every homogenized language, a formally correct and factually applicable description of the true statement can be constructed in the metalanguage with the sole help of expressions of a general-logical character, expressions of the language itself and terms from the morphology of the language, but on the condition that the metalanguage is of an advanced order than the language that's the subject of the disquisition."

Video game strategy:
Main composition Metagaming
In videotape gaming and esports, a metagame, or"meta", is the optimal or most dominant strategy. (14) (15) Metas are generally determined by the community of the game in question. (15) Depending on the game, this may indicate characters, balconies, particulars, or other choices used almost constantly in top-league or professional play. It could also indicate optimal tactics and strategies. (14) Metas may change when the inventors of a game make changes to the strength of certain game rudiments, known as" suckers" and"nerfs" for increases and diminishments in mileage, independently.
